This course gives learners the opportunity to develop their numeracy and arithmetic skills, basic mathematical problem-solving skills, and the ability to apply mathematical thinking to real-life situations.
The course will help learners to develop numeracy skills for everyday life and provide a foundation for progression to further education. In particular, the course will allow students to develop the numeracy skills required for future study of GCSE Mathematics.
You will be assessed across three different levels (from Entry Level 1 to Entry Level 3) and you will be awarded a certificate for the highest level achieved. The assessments take place at the college, in the usual classroom environment, and consist of both a calculator and a non-calculator section.
Entry Level Functional Skills is a lower-level qualification than GCSE and suitable for students who do not yet have the mathematical skills required to study GCSE mathematics. Early in the course you will be assessed and offered to transfer to the GCSE course if your tutor feels this is more appropriate.
Topics studied include:
• Carrying out calculations with and without a calculator
• Rounding and ordering numbers including decimals
• Understand and recognise simple fractions
• Common 2D and 3D shapes and their features
• Using measures of length, weight and volume
• Representing data in tables and charts
