This nationally recognised course is validated by the NCFE, and although it is not a licence to practise as a counsellor it provides a progression route to a Level 3 in Counselling.

This course is an ideal qualification for those working in an environment where interpersonal skills are needed and who wish to consolidate their skills and knowledge. It gives learners the opportunity to understand the skills needed for effective communication, and is also useful for those considering a career in supporting people and who seek to develop their skills.

Developing effective skills in counselling is about learning how to engage in helpful interactions with a person who needs assistance and support. You will focus on practical counselling skills and the theory that supports this while developing your personal qualities and self-awareness.

Lessons have a variety of activities including role play, case study and scenario work. Peer work is used to support and develop each other's practice and discussion and reflection is used to consider topics such as prejudice and stereotypes. You will keep a reflective diary/journal to help you develop your skills.

Although this course will not qualify you to be a counsellor it could be the first step towards this and it provides you with the counselling skills that can support a variety of such as; key work, care, mentoring, youth work, support worker, education, mental health, the homeless, substance misuse, education, and health and social care.
